This unique album presents a landmark in AustraliaÆ’??s musical history: the first opera fully composed and professionally presented in this country.
Composed by Isaac Nathan, whom some regard as the „Father of Australian musicÆ’??, the opera premiered in 1847 in SydneyÆ’??s Royal Victoria Theatre. The late Sir Charles Mackerras (a great-great-great-grandson of Nathan), concerned that this important work was in danger of being forgotten, in 1963 conducted the Sydney Symphony in a performance of the operaÆ’??s overture, using his own reconstruction.
Now for the first time, the complete opera has been recorded by the Sydney Symphony. Conducted by Alexander Briger, MackerrasÆ’?? nephew and great-great-great-great-grandson of Isaac Nathan, this live recording featuring a star cast of Australian soloists captures the operaÆ’??s first Australian professional performance since 1847.
