Choir of the Benedictine Abbey Münsterschwarzach | Martin Grubinger, percussion

Traditional Gregorian Chants Arranged for choir and drums.

The incomparable multi-percussionist Martin Grubinger has made solo appearances at Carnegie Hall and Vienna’s Musikverein, just two of the famous venues where his revolutionary artistry has left audiences cheering. In his Deutsche Grammophon debut recording, Martin seizes upon the conventions of Gregorian chant – the most archaic style of singing in the West – and makes music history by layering onto its venerable stock a tapestry of percussion sound with choir that vibrates with the elemental energy of a primary force.

All tracks are new arrangements written by Martin Grubinger and other musicians performing on this recording, based on already existing Gregorian chants sung by the monks of the Benedictine Abbey Münsterschwarzach. Using percussion’s entire sonic spectrum in ways never before employed, Martin Grubinger amalgamates colours, sounds, textures – and wit – into an experience new to our ears. With Grubinger, we explore where pulse can lead the soul.

Among other brilliant musicians, Albrecht Mayer joins the recording as a special guest on two tracks.
