Lauren Bacall recorded at the Carlyle, New York, in 2004

American stage and screen legend Lauren Bacall has died in her home, aged 89.

She lit up the screen in films such as Key Largo and The Big Sleep, where she starred with her equally legendary husband, Humphrey Bogart.

She won an Oscar for The Mirror has Two Faces and beat Grace Kelly to take the starring role in Designing Women. "I fought for that part in Designing Woman," she said. "I wanted it badly. I took a lower salary, I did everything. Grace Kelly said, ‘I’ll never forgive you for playing that part. It was written for me.’ She got the prince, I got the part."

Nine years ago in a suite at the Carlyle, her favourite hotel in New York, Lauren Bacall spoke to Caroline Baum about her life.
